​5000 years on 2½ metre.

The Greek-Swedish Excavations (GSE) have documented 5000 years of continous history of the modern town of Khaniá except for 400 years from the end of the Bronze Age till the end of the Geometric period when prople returned to re-settled in the ruins of the Minoan hoses.

The excavations have revealed important finds from all periods, but what make the excavation unique in Crete is that it has - as the only place - revealed six stratified habitaions within the Late Minoan III period (c. 1400-1150 BC). This important period of Cretan history is therefore now documented much better than it has previously been.

​

The GSE 1970-1987 and in 2001 covers an area of c. 600 m2 with an average depth of 2-2½ metre from surface to where the excavations stopped or where bedrock was found. C. 20 tons of pottry has been excavated, 16 957 pieces of pottery have been inventoried and 6200 small finds registered.

In 2010 the excavation beamoe a Greek.Swedish-Danish Excavation, with new important finds from the first season.

CHANIA

5000 år på 2.5 meter!

De grekisk-svenska utgrävningarna på Kreta har dokumenterat 5000 år av sammanhängande bebyggelse och historia i den moderna stad som nu kallas Chaniá, från slutet av bronsåldern till slutet av den geometriska perioden då människor återvände och åter bosatte sig i ruinerna av de minoiska husen.

Utgrävningarna har funnit intressanta fynd från alla perioderna, men vad som gör dessa grävningar unika på Keta är, att som enda fyndplats, har man funnit och dokumenterat sex byggnadsperioder bara inom den sen minoisk period II (ca 1400-1150 f.Kr) Denna viktiga period i kretensisk historia är därmed plötsligt belyst och dokumenterad.

Utgrävningarna 1970-1987 samt 2001 täcker en yta av ca 600 kvm och med ett genomsnittligt djup av 2-2.5 meter. Ungefär 20 ton keramik har grävts ut, 16 957 fragment av keramik har registrats liksom 6200 s.k. små fynd.

2010 blev grävningarna ett samarbete som äntligen även inbegrep danska intressen och kallas nu the Greek-Swedish-Danish Excavations.
